President U Thein Sein last week nominated a deputy attorney general to take on the mantle of attorney general in the new government, an Amyotha Hluttaw representative told The Myanmar Times.

The president nominated Dr Tun Shin to the post on February 18, the MP said.

The 2008 constitution states that the duties, powers and rights of the attorney general and deputy attorney general will be prescribed by law.

On February 17, the eighth day of the first Pyidaungsu Hluttaw session in Nay Pyi Taw, the current deputy chief justice of the Supreme Court was appointed as the new chief justice.

Earlier in the week U Thein Sein nominated U Tun Tun Oo to head up the Supreme Court, which is the highest court in the country, and no objections were received.

According to the constitution, the president and the chief justice are required to nominate the other six members of the Supreme Court and submit the list of names to the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw for approval.
