Hill town in race for sustainable city prize

The famed hill town of Pyin Oo Lwin in Mandalay Region has been nominated for the ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable Cities Award 2011, a Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) official said last week.

The nomination was confirmed at the 9th ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable Cities and 1st ASEAN Initiative on Environmentally Sustainable Cities meetings, which were held concurrently in Yangon on May 2 and 3, said the official, who is from the committee’s Pollution Control and Cleansing Department

Among the other nominations were Phnom Penh in Cambodia, Surabaya in Indonesia, Xamnua in Laos, Perbadanan in Malaysia, South West CDC in Singapore and Da Nang in Vietnam.

He said the nominations were categories as either big cities or small cities, depending on their population. In total, six awards will be chosen with prizes given to large and small cities considered to have the cleanest air, water and land.

Pyin Oo Lwin was nominated in the clean water category as a small city, the official said. The award ceremony will be held in Phnom Penh in October.
